Would a exhaust leak cause misfires by mis reading the exhaust fumes and calling for more/less fuel which could cut back fuel needed to ignite?

Yep, it almost looks like coolant stains. Annoying stuff, I wait until spring to clean the engine bay.

I ordered plugs that were ngk and noticed it was in a platinum edition  packaging indicating platinum plugs. I don't recall my past plugs being platinum. Maybe the shipper sent the wrong version plug?

Wow only 500 miles. It's hard to justify spending $ to have it soda blasted or have my Indy remove the manifold and scrape it myself as either way all that hard work or $ will inevitably be spent again..  I had my coils/plugs/front o2 replaced and smooth sailing since. Seems a good place to start with these kind of issues. Hope everything worked out tony. I know we were talking o2 replacements the other week and I guess that didn't do the trick. Audis like to keep our wallets light but it's worth it.

Running with malfunctioning injectors probably didn't help the carbon buildup.   Sad

yeeppp.... we had the valves spit shinning clean too. and we used the soda/walnut blaster. new injectors seem to have done the trick, hopefully the rich and lean codes go away too! here's a picture from after the cleaning.

sorry, don't know how to edit posts on here but just something to look at when your manifold is off, i found that the passenger side bank flaps have a bit more play then the driver side... i didn't go to investigate more because i've never had a fault code or power loss from it but just take a look and see if you guys have that problem too...

900 miles since the decarb!, 400 since the injectors and so far so good! no misfire codes no lean/rich codes! but still have codes for the rear o2 sensors on both banks for (heater circuit) trying to save that until the CEL comes on daily because the rears i was told don't monitor fuel ratio's, etc.

that's good to hear.   Bit of a kick in the face to have to buy injectors.  That's the weakest link on the Rs4.

Carbon buildup is really not a big deal...but it seems at 100,000 miles or so, lots of cars are having misfire problems related to failing or unhappy injectors.

Has anyone having these problems sent their injectors out to be serviced?  I think it's $20/injector and they come back like new.   Not sure if it would work, but certainly worth a try vs. paying $800-1000 for 8 injectors.

For those who have done replacement, might be a good gamble to get your old ones serviced and then sell them.

Are the rear O2 sensors similar to the S4? Because I keep seeing you mentioning that they don't have anything to do with fuel ratios. The B6/7 S4s use the secondaries for long term fuel trim, I would imagine the RS4 doing the same. This is the reason why the rear o2s aren't just shut off in the JHM tune, because the ECU still need the inputs. I'm not sure if this effects much, but I guess it could cause less than stellar gas mileage.

Just order eBay injectors that look the same, don't even worry about the part number..injectors are injectors, right? Roll Eyes

yup will be sending out 6 of the 8 since the other two needed vice grips to remove

when i get these codes, the exhaust note changes just a bit... say I'm doing 60 mph and press the cloth, shift to 4th and coasting at 60 in neutral and slowly letting go of the clutch in 4th gear when the engine is hot the exhaust makes an abnormal 2 seconds of fast burbling before the burble goes to normal burbling. its hard to describe.

Tony got to have 150 posts before you can edit.

I can't comment on the codes, but I'm sure someone with a bit more knowledge can help you out! Personally if the breather hose was sealed off properly you should have no issues with that piece.

thanks for the 150 post tip. and the hose was temporarily fixed so i assume it can contribute to it?

on another note, maybe my rear o2 sensors were swapped accidentally during the gutting process of the pre cats
